Hi Shawn
I discovered your videos a few weeks ago and have not stopped smiling since. Partly because they/you are amusing and partly because I've started to hit the ball better than before and to be able to move it both ways, although still struggling with the draw. Better still, for the first time I think I understand what's going on when the ball doesn't go as planned. As a 66 year old playing off 11 and with a stiff spine, I thought my best days were behind me but your teaching has thankfully changed that and I'm going to work on getting back to 9 if possible. Thank you.

Thanks Shawn - you have a great tip on how to create backspin by how tight you grip the club - amazing! Thanks a lot.

This works! And for DECADES I was softening my grip because 'experts' said grip tension would slow down my swing. I hadn't noticed that, over the years, this focus on a 'soft' grip had caused me to actually release the club with my right hand at the top of my swing, causing all kinds of inconsistencies on my downswing. Thanks, Shawn.

Great explanation for something that I think too many teaching professionals make WAY too complicated. Develop a secure grip for the student, get their hand position correct, and let their instincts take over. I really believe this is the way it should be taught. I think too many teaching professionals underestimate or simply don't understand that the brain will do its job in making sure the club stays connected to the hands. I am still to this day recovering from incorrect teaching in regards to the grip. I constantly fight the base of my club coming away from my hands resulting in an over-swing and then having to make a compensating move to recover the grip on the club. All because I'm trying to unlearn something that should have never been taught (hold it like a bird...blah)!

it's finally stopped raining here and the courses are starting to recover. I've really been enjoying putting to work everything I've learned from you over the winter months. Played 6 or so rounds this year and almost back to single digit handicap after not playing much while working and raising kids for 10-ish years. You're awesome bud...great work!

It’s very true. Before these two videos came out I have been experimenting with a tighter grip. It helped enormously. Better strikes and more power. Holding it lightly was really hurting my game. 👍

So I just went to the range this morning to put the experiment to the test. Medium grip pressure throughout swing compared to medium grip pressure until just before ball contact then super high grip pressure in the left hand. HUGE difference in contact quality and distance when you grip the crap out of it just before contact. No contest.
I should have also added that using just the medium grip pressure throughout the swing will give inconsistent results in ball flight compared to super high grip pressure just before contact, which gives a consistent ball flight with all clubs and more distance. Glad you brought up this topic Shawn, great video.

The range/ background looks cgi’ed. You’re one lucky man, Shawn! Thank you for the video!

Hi Shawn, I do really agree. My experience over the last 3 to 4 years has been exactly the same as you describe. You need grip pressure especially in the right hand for me as a right handed player to initiate enough swing speed and control for a shot. Many Pros teach it differently.... Thank you.

Embarrassed to say that I initially scoffed at this notion, believing that tight in the fingers would mean tight throughout the arms. But while playing the last two days, I gave it a try, attempting to keep a *tight* grip in the fingers while simultaneously trying to relieve tension in the wrists and arms. I immediately picked up distance with my driver. while driving it a bit straighter. the big change was in mid irons (5-7) where I could actually sense that I was decreasing dynamic loft, and started hitting approached straighter, with the distance I was expecting.

Maybe it's because I'm pretty athletic already, but thinking about grip pressure really mucked up a few of my shots the other day. After a few attempts at consciously varying the pressure, I decided to stop trying to control it and just let my instincts do the job. After that, things got much better. It might be something to monitor in practice, like during the perpetual motion drill...see if your hands are coming off at the top...but during play, I like to stick with what kind of shot fits the given situation.

Great follow up Vid Shawn and thank you for the clarification. I have practised a couple of times at the Range applying more Grip pressure than I would normally and I have picked up approx 10Yards per club. I`m sticking with this for the rest of the season and it will be interesting to monitor my scores.

Shawn, this is a great video and ensuing talk. You already told us that we are born gravity experts. Maybe we also are born grip-anything-experts?
I never seem to question myself when using a hammer, a garden tool, a fork, a knife, a power drill, holding an umbrella or riding a bike in rough terrain.
The grip pressure seems to be just right most of the time, and if not immediately correct then after a small adjustment. Like when you have to change the spark plug on your mover.
Let the right grip pressure find you!

when I hammer a nail, if I have a light grip pressure the hammer head just bounces of the nail head and transmits very little force/energy. So I try to envision the same pressure as hammering nails. This is another great video. Perhaps your series should be re-named "Secrets of Great Golf".

This is important thing. Yesterday one man was saying that he has to change grip beacause he feel pain in hand. Today one women hurt her hand 😑 I have always like the hammer drill. Grip has to be secure, but you also have to let it go. I have never heard any carpenter talk about grip pressure 😉

I always say you can grip it as tight as you want, But using only the hand muscles, no muscles past the wrist line to be used. But for people with weaker hand's they could watch this and start using forearms biceps and shoulder muscle's to grip tighter, which would definitely slow your swing down.

Shawn, Doesn't sound like your buddy Robert Johansson agrees with what you have to say, he's calling BS on you. This guy does a lot of talking but doesn't say much or have anything to back up his points in my opinion. I've watched a few of his vids and he just talks a lot and hits fat shots, lol.
