for those who haven’t watched/read demon slayer (or haven’t gotten to that part), giyu and his sister (tsutako) had a normal childhood. after their parents died (due to an unknown disease), they were forced to fend for themselves. the day before tsutako’s wedding should’ve been a normal day, but it wasn’t. tsutako and giyu encountered a demon and tsutako sacrificed her life to save giyu. giyu tried to explain that his sister was killed by a demon, but no one believe him and they all thought he was mentally ill. giyu was later sent to live with his relative who was a doctor, but giyu decided to run away. giyu almost died while on a mountain, but he was later rescued by a hunter. giyu then became an apprentice under sakonji urokodaki (and learned the water breathing technique). giyu was 13 years old when he met sabito (sabito was also being trained by mr. urokodaki at the time) and they became rlly good friends. one time when giyu told sabito that he wanted to die, sabito wasn’t happy to hear that. he hit him across the cheek and even threatened to end their friendship if he kept thinking like that. sabito also reminded giyu of how his sister sacrificed herself for him so that giyu could live. both sabito and giyu entered the final selection together (which is an event/test that takes place on mount fujikasane to determine whether or not you’re fit to be a part of the demon slayer corps. the goal is to survive the entire 7 days on the demon infested mountain. you don’t necessarily have to kill any demons, but you do have to survive) alongside many other potential demon slayers. giyu wasn’t very strong at the time and was injured after a demon attack. giyu was saved by sabito and was told to take care of another boy who was also injured (or something of the sort). sabito killed almost every demon during the final selection, but as the week progressed, it was revealed that sabito was killed by the hand demon. sabito protected and saved everyone, but he wasn’t able to save himself from death. everyone from that year’s final selection passed except for sabito. giyu later became the water hashira (hashira is the highest rank in the demon slayer corps), but he always thought that he wasn’t like the rest of the hashiras. he always thought of himself as the fake hashira due to the fact that he barely passed the final selection. he also thought that if sabito was still alive, he would’ve became the water hashira instead of him.
