Maya Kowalski's Fight for Truth

In June 2023, Netflix released a documentary called “Take Care of Maya,” which takes an in-depth look at her story and the case against All Children's Hospital.
They say you should always trust the experts, but even the experts get it wrong sometimes. It’s up to the jury to decide if the Kowalski family tragedy could’ve been prevented and if their actions drove Beata Kowalski to take her own life.
But what do you think of this case? Have you watched the documentary yet?

I can attest to the number of kids that are removed as I was a social worker for years in Pinellas County, Florida. There were times that I had as many as 80 kids on my caseload & it was often depressing & exhausting. I was there when the system became privatized & it was the worst thing they could have done. This is an awful case & I just found out that apparently one of my former colleagues is involved in. I also knew Cathy Bedy & she was horrible. Both her & Dr. Sally Smith should have been terminated & no longer allowed to work with children.

As someone with chronic pain syndrome, fibromyalgia and ddd, the pain is very very real. This case is heartbreaking. It's outrageous I can't imagine dealing with my pain as a child. It's hard enough as an adult.

This case has brought back so many memories that I have had locked away. Very similarly to Maya, I became ill when I was young. I had test after test & many hospital stays. When the doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong with me, they had CPS step in. I was involuntarily put into a mental hospital for 2 weeks. It was hell. The only difference being that I didn't have the loving family Maya has.
I deal with so much medical PTSD because of it.

I truly hope Maya is able to find peace and heal from the trauma this hospital caused her.

Horrors don't only happen in war-ridden countries; they often occur in healthcare institutions that knowingly blind us to the truth. Thanks, Chris, for your insightful summary of this truly heartbreaking case.

As a veterinarian, I think it is disgusting that it cost that much for ketamine infusions. I use the drug quite a bit to help anesthetize my patients.. I can order a pack of 12 10mg bottles for 340.00 .. it is the exact same drug..😡

As someone who is currently in never ending severe chronic pain. When doctors look at you like an addict and junkie looking for drugs. I just walk away from those docs. It takes time sometimes years to find a doctor who believes you and is actually willing to help you by prescribing narcotics. So you can live a fraction of your former pain free life.

This is outrageous!!! Sue them criminally, civilly, each person involved. Press charges because someone needs to go to jail!

I have just recently started following the court case, and to see Maya’s brother testify and his tears remind us that it wasn’t just Maya that was affected by the hospital. Her brother should have at least been able to see her…. And her priest! Such a sad story with no real good ending except that Maya is getting stronger every day…. Love your recaps!!

"Can I hug my child?"
"Not today."
That poor woman 😥❤ What kind of vile man has that kind of power? It's disgusting.

I have Fibromyalgia and am in never ending pain every day. Doctors are so dismissive of such conditions and can be downright rude and make you feel so small. Poor Maya and her parents.

This case breaks my heart, that poor girl was in so much pain and all her parents wanted was to get her relief 💔

Another culprit in this case is the judge. Unfortunately, judges enjoy judicial immunity, which allows them to get away with damned near anything. Disgusting.

And, as always, a superlative video!

This story was heartbreaking. I am glad Beata recorded all the phone calls with the hospital. It’s so sad that she felt the only way her daughter could go home was by ending her life. The hospital was horrible to her.

About 5 years ago my son at the time was 2yo. He fell off a bed and needed stitches. He ran into walls alot and had alot of bumps and bruises and he has a Mongolian birth mark on his butt. Thank goodness his normal pediatrcian who knows us noted all this which I always thought was silly she said better safe to note all this. Boy was I thankfull when we went to all childrens and they sent in a social worker in saying I was abusing him. Thank goodness for the pediatrcians notes because they didn't believe the purple marks were birth marks AND they didn't believe me that he ran into walls and fell alot which was another issue but my son with a bleeding head waiting for stitches ran across the room laughing and playing and ran head first into a wall and jumped back up and kept running! I think that saved us! Proof he was just clumsy. This scares me how easily they could have accused us of abuse.

I was born in Baltimore along with Earth Day and the National Academy of Medicine in 1970. I've seen the beast that our local Johns Hopkins has become, so I say "Trust NO Expert" and "Question EVERY thing they say."

I am in my 40th year as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and have never seen anyone who was truly a patient of munchausen by proxy. Several fake diagnoses by others but none were substantiated. This reminds me of the McMartin Day Care case out of California where it was found to be made up with the help of a therapist. Sounds like two supposed well respected "professionals" who over stepped the professional standards we are supposed to practice by.
