8,500 U.S. troops on alert over Russia-Ukraine standoff

The U.S. and its NATO allies are showing a united front in the face of Russian hostility toward Ukraine. The U.S. has 8,500 troops on alert, ready to deploy to Eastern Europe within five days if the situation deteriorates. CBS News correspondent Laura Podesta joins "CBS News Mornings" with more on the Biden administration's response.

With all of Russia's struggles and problems, it boggles the mind why any Russian leader would think, "Our problem is that we lack enough territory and Real Estate!" Meanwhile, quite secure and powerful countries like Israel, which are nearly 800 times smaller than Russia, and even the United Arab Emirates, which is about 200 times smaller, are doing quite well by any comparison. The NATO pact in 2021 has 30 member countries who asked to join the alliance and had to be voted on by the members to join. At the height of the “Cold War” the Warsaw pact had 8 members who were forced to join by the former USSR; now Russia fights alone. Neutral Sweden has put their military on higher alert. They have moved their quick-response fighter jets to the island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea, off Sweden’s southeast coast near the Russian border. France, a nonaligned NATO member, is brokering talks along with German to defuse the situation. Russia is becoming a pariah in the world. Countries and private businesses will take a hard look at doing business with Russia being so belligerent and unpredictable.
