The best virtual audio device on MacOS - Loopback 2

Can Loopback 2 solve all my audio software routing needs?

Rogue Amoeba recently updated their Loopback software to version 2 and I reached out to them for a review copy, which they were happy to provide.

In my short time with it I quickly realized it is a near essential tool for routing audio on the mac.

With Loopback 2 I'm able to create a virtual audio device that combines my microphone, the output of skype, the output of reaper, firefox, Zoom, iTunes (pretty much anything) within one interface that I can access as an audio device in Screenflow for recording, or OBS for streaming.

I'm looking forward to trying this out with streaming for real soon.

In this video you'll see the problems I face when creating videos, how Loopback 2 solves those problems, as well as many pros and cons of this software.

To summarize my complaints
1 - can't reroute virtual audio cables once connected (have to delete and make new
2 - no undo, it''s easy to shift-click the wrong thing and since there's a lot of delete key action needed, I had to start over a couple times.
3 - can't back up, export, share settings.
4 - metering and volume controls do not have dB or % markings or tooltips. Very mac-like but not great for audio people.
5 - Price, it's $99 US and that's a lot of damage. But I don't think there's anything else close to what this can do.

I've forwarded these complaints/feature requests to Rogue Amoeba and it seems to be things that are on their wish list as well. Hopefully these things will be added before long.

i tried showU too and sound soundflower, even created multiple midi audio devices on my mac and nothing worked either! so frustrating, especially that i have a background in audio! i was trying to stream my dj equipment out through obs. i was either able to stream with the midi devices but had no headphones or was able to utilize my head phones with my equipment but couldnt stream! I downloaded this, set it up and within seconds everything worked and streamed perfectly!! WHOO HOO! SUCH A RELIEF! THANK YOU SO MUCH! LIFE SAVER!

Thank you Jon from the past!! – this video saved me. I can't believe I've managed to get by using Soundflower til now.
I used to just set the output of REAPER to an aggregate device of Soundflower + My Interface. This works okay if I don't need to do any actual recording for the tutorial.
But when I wanted to record, I would have to set REAPER's input to my interface and the output to the aggregate. This would be so unstable and give me so much latency overtime. Most of my guitar recording tutorials I am dealing with insane latency, I had to keep resetting the device, made the whole thing so frustrating haha.
Just tried loopbacks trial and its so straight forward! nice :) so expensive tho wtf

I wasn’t able to tie safari into a single audio source for stream with ground control. It was all system sounds only… loopback was worth it! Thx

Does the Loopback degraded audio sound good after the trial?

I’m curious I’ve used loopback 1 since it came out and it works great but version 2 has a better GUI to work with so I will be picking it up soon. But the GUI and functionality are super similar to Carla an open source virtual jack patch bay Loopback looks like super polished version of Carla. I wonder if that was an inspiration for version 2 or maybe it even contains some of the Carla code under the hood. I love the Rouge Amoeba apps I have almost all of them piezo, the airplay client and others. It’s just a thought but I would love to pick the dev’s brain about this app. Great stuff as always Jon!

I'm trying to record a screen recording with Quicktime and use Loopback to include audio in the recording, but all the videos are coming out muted. I can't seem to figure out what I'm doing wrong after watching this video.

Hey Jon, thanks for the video. Do you know how one can stream audio from youtube into a daw, (im using logic), and then output it directly to my monitorrs?

In Cubase, it shows all the inputs, but no outputs

is there a particular reason the software cost as much as a physical hardware mixer. I'm all for supporting devs but compared to SoundFlower (where this basically started), paying over $100 bucks for a virtual mixer is frankly nuts. you can still get a Fork of SoundFlower at gethub for free. Holy hell, if this Loopback app was $1, $5 or maybe even $15 i would pick it up.

does anyone know how to just unhook a cable. For example i have a multi out "source" device and it automatically hooks up outputs 1 and 2 to Loopback's "output channel" 1 and 2 but i want 3 and 4 to come out of my source not 1 and 2 but i can't seem to get the cables off.

It doesn't work for me. it adds nothing to my setup, the sound is still coming from the speakers. Just pulling money from fools. You can change the output manually in the speaker icon next to the clock.
