in the movies they beat their chests like they're knocking on a door where in reality they beat their chests like a drum(mostly bongos congas and tom toms)

I learned as a child when I saw *Gorillas in the Mist* with Sigourney Weaver.
The movie uses both real gorillas and fake ones (people in gorilla suits) but the sound design is surprisingly realistic.

Not only does it feature *real chest pounding sound effects, * but also *real gorilla roars, * which (you guessed it) also sound *a lot different* from what most Hollywood productions would have us believe.

They also use it as a way to let others know where they are, like if they are outside the main group in the forest.
