Do You Suffer From Decision Fatigue?

“Decision fatigue helps explain why ordinarily sensible people get angry at colleagues and families, splurge on clothes, buy junk food at the supermarket and can’t resist the dealer’s offer to rustproof their new car. “

New Brain Study Shows Why Making Difficult Choices Sucks

“A new study in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences shines some light on the nature of this sort of anxiety, and shows, perhaps unsurprisingly, that it's most potent when we're choosing between two things that we both greatly covet.”

Don't you just love spending a couple of hours deciding what to watch on Netflix? Not actually watching anything, just trying to decide what to watch.

There are literally 40+ brands of extra virgin olive oil at my local Walmart, and I mentally break down in tears every time I see that isle.

Yes decisions are paralysing. I owned a small business about 30 years ago, the Menu initially had about 60 varied choices, you would see people staring at it, talking / mumbling to themselves.
Eventually for other reasons, I thinned the menu to about 25 items, in 4 categories, through put times dropped dramatically.
Customers were happy we had made their choice easier. I was happy because we sold only the more popular products, and didn't have to stock certain products/ingredients that took forever to move, or would expire before consumed. Win / Win.

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much.

We have multiplied our possessions but reduced our values.
We talk too much, love too seldom and hate too often.

We ve leaned how to make a living but not a life.
We've added years to life, not life to years

I failed a psychology test once because I couldn't choose which one of the five essay questions on offer I should choose. The main problem was, i believe, none of them were difficult enough relative to each other for me to single out the easiest one even when I finally narrowed my choices down to 2.

As soon as I started writing about one topic, I saw myself flooded with ideas about the other one including with the thought of how much better I would do if I chose the other. I'd go back in forth like that, becoming more and more stressed in the process until only 15 minutes were left for me to complete the exam. So In the end I frantically sketched and turned in a crappy essay which left my teacher baffled. Being that he Knew my academic strength, He couldn't help asking: "What happened, Germain?!"

Whats this hogwash science.
Everything you do gives you stress and anxiety. Look the market solves problems like this with things like advertising and branding. Everyone compete for your time and attentions.
The most advertised or trusted brand might be not be the best for the customer but it is the easiest and stress free choice.
That's there customer demographic.
Do i buy the expensive Toyota car or do i buy a cheap Japanese car. The Japanese one might be more suited for my needs but Toyota is a trusted brand and maybe they just advertised on tv.

I have heard this before and it just isn't true for me. I love variety and choice. The problem with a lot of products, as mentioned in the video is that there is more of an illusion of choice than real choice of truly different options for a lot of things. But this is not true of everything. And there more options I have, the happier I am because I can find the perfect thing for me.

Wrong! choice is not the problem, understanding your choices is. (Even neo had to go see the oracle to understand his choice to get rid of his anxiety! ;) )

It really sucks to have decision making difficulties. I just avoid choosing and do nothing.
