Jonah 4 | Is God’s Mercy Evil? | Bible Study

This Bible study devotional covers Jonah 4. In this passage, Jonah calls God’s mercy “evil,” and God sends a plant to confront Jonah’s hypocrisy.

As always, we are committed to showing you how to see the good news of the Gospel in every passage of Scripture. In Jonah 4, we see that, like Jonah, we demand God’s mercy, thinking we deserve it while resenting God’s mercy towards our enemies. But the good news is that Jesus died only for sinners and enemies.

This is some hard hitting stuff. I find myself every now and again, without even realizing, looking down on people for their evil deeds without understanding that, outside of the grace and mercy of God, I could have been in the same or an even worse position than they. We ought to count it a privilege more often to have God's mercy and grace on us, and it should motivate us to both reciprocate that love and to act as a conduit so we can show it to others.
