This video is an introduction to the algebraic method for solving chemical equations. Most general chemistry students are taught to solve chemical equations using a trial and error approach. However, all chemical equations can be balancing using algebra.

a NH3 + b O2 = c NO + d H2O

N 1a = 1c
H 3a = 2d
O 2b = c + d

Let a = 1
c = 1
d = 3/2
b = 5/4

Multiply all by 4
a = 4
b = 5
c = 4
d= 6

4NH3 + 5O2 = 4NO + 6H2O

Verify : 4N on left and 4 N on right
12 H on left, 12 H on right
10 O on left = 10 O on right

what happens if you try to balance a more complex equation, like:

KHSO4 + H2O + Na2S -> H2S + Na2SO4 + K2O

a KHSO4 + b H2O + c Na2S -> d H2S + e Na2SO4 + f K2O

S : 1*a + 1*c = 1*d + 1*e
Na : 2*c = 2*e
H : 1*a + 2*b = 2*d
K : 1*a = 2*f
O : 4*a + 1*b = 4*e + 1*f

I am forced to set more than 1 letter to 1 (1:44) during the process of balancing.
Is that the correct approach?
