After wearing glasses for 24 years of my life, I’m finally to the point where they no longer benefit me. In this video I share about how I came to the decision to stop wearing glasses and my feelings about it.

It really does confuse people. I just got my first guide dog and people seem pretty puzzled since I wear glasses to help my remaining vision. Go get yourself all sorts of funky sunglasses. 😊

I can so relate. I am 53 years old and my current visual adventure began 4 years ago. I had worn glasses since I was probably 10 years old. Two years ago, after two years of being legally blind and have everything be very blurry, I decided to cast aside and stop wearing my last pair of prescription glasses. with my current vision, all the glasses did for me was to make everything still blurry but a high definition blurry. While everything is still blurry without the glasses, I just stopped fooling myself with the very minimal improvement they provided. I am going on almost two and a half years coping without them and my white cane and monocular.

Using my screen magnify is the only way I can use my computer, and I see that you look very lovely without glasses. I am glad you have 'graduated' out of them!

You look adorable with and without glasses. I hate wearing glasses, especially in the hot weather, so I would just stop wearing them if I could.

7:40 As a non-blind person, I felt this a lot when I finally switched to contact lenses. I had been wearing glasses pretty much since childhood, and I always wore really fashionable glasses, so I was known as the guy with the cool glasses. When I no longer needed to wear them, I felt like my identity had changed. I missed it so much, I ended up buying some non-prescription glasses to wear with my contacts just to feel like myself again LOL. The good part about it is I can buy any glasses I want and wear them immediately right off the shelf. Before, I'd only have 1 or 2 pairs of prescription glasses because it was too expensive to get prescriptions for more. But now, I can have a whole collection of frames I can wear with all my outfits, so it's not completely pointless that I switched to contacts.

I’ve never worn glasses as I have essentially no central vision and only peripheral vision and the frames used to slightly obscure my peripheral vision The only ones I will wear are wrap around shades
My eyesight is starting to deteriorate slightly more rapidly these days and I get the same thing as you they become uncomfortable I guess it’s from straining them.
I’m so glad I’m a lad and don’t have to worry about things like make up and you look fine without glasses

The burning sensation, I felt that during the summer of my sixth grade.
I wore rex specs every day from like second or third grade and pretty much ditched them before I went into middle school, now I feel that familiar burning sensation whenever I try to focus on the screen for more than like 10 minutes.
Nowadays I just listen to the audio of videos and stuff and I’m more reliant on hearing things and actually looking at things, I also feel kind of called out because I also haven’t been to the ophthalmologist in two years because of the pandemic as well.
I think when it comes to RP, there’s a certain point where you just say forget it, and ditch your glasses and it feels so relieving.
Oh and thought I would add this after a few minutes, I was diagnosed with RP when I was six I am currently 21 I’ll be 22 in October, I’ve actually had glasses for like two years in high school but then I kid you not not even six months after getting them my vision got worse to the point where the glasses weren’t even helping anymore and I just said, well time to ditch him again.

I’m nearing the point that glasses don’t help. Feels like a bigger deal than when I stopped driving.

I tell my wife she is beautiful. She never believes me. That being said, I trust whatever you husband says.

Hey Cayla! Hope all is well with you and Ethan. I’m there with you on the glasses not being useful. I just had an eye exam two weeks ago, and the nurse called to make sure I didn’t need a refraction. I chuckled, and told her I was past the need for them. 😎👩🏽‍🦯

My number and intensely of headaches has gotten better since I stopped wearing my glasses. I have RP with about 5 degrees left. They have not helped me see in a long time.

You are so cute!! I am at 39 I started wearing glasses at age 8 diagnosed with our P at 13 and gave up my glasses at 28 approximately 11 almost 12 years ago! Sort of the same reason you dad started getting terrible headaches from staring at my work screen and when I had my daughter I was too tired to mess with my glasses or headaches! So I just sort of stopped wearing them! I have not looked back! When you start doing your make up and you will be surprised how easy it is to do as a blind woman because a lot of it is very tactile get ready for all the compliments you will get when people realize you did your make up not someone else! Be warned without glasses and your cane you will be asked if you have tried glasses! I am not joking!! Congratulations on the new freedom from glasses!!😃

I think you look nice without glasses. I prefer using my contact lenses when I can, because I always felt like glasses covered my face. Also, like the reasons you mentioned about confusing people and being a nuisance to deal with them.

Enjoy not cleaning your glasses!!

It is interesting to hear about your continued glasses use and prescription updates. I am not legally blind, but have RP. Already my optometrist/optician (not my retina specialist) is talking about adaptation and the suggestion that I should start getting used to less corrected vision. That didn’t make sense to me, as I thought I’d want my remaining central vision to be as good as possible. So, interesting to hear your perspective on that!

Im pretty sure that im using my last pair of glasses. It must feel bitter sweet to go without them . Honestly your a beautiful with or without glasses or makeup.
I have rod cone dystrophy so I'm viewing from your personality mostly. For makeup purposes I use 500 magnifying reader plus a magnifying mirror. Still difficult to do much makeup as colors are off a bit so I don't do much . I use multi purpose makeup like bb or cc cream foundation. Little concealer, mascara and brow pencil. Little goes a long way or at least I think 🤔
My daughter has to check it . Lol whatever you or comfortable with is the right answer

You’re lovely with or without glasses. I only wear glasses when using my ipad. Still have to get right up close to the screen, but it helps with eye fatigue. Just go with sunglasses, lol. A couple benefits I feel about not wearing glasses all the time is not having them slide down when it’s hot, no fogging up or having to wipe rain off them. You have such pretty skin, you shouldn’t have to worry about makeup, other than sunscreen. You could alway try a tinted moisturizer with spf. Easy to apply with multiple benefits. 😊
