Waking up embarrassed from anesthesia 😳

your mindset before surgery, whether major or minor surgery, may affect how you wake up from anesthesia. there is a lot we don't understand about emergence delirium, and why we wake up emotional, screaming, crying, or saying ridiculous things. however, it is very important to have a healthy, healing mindset before something as major as surgery. who knows, it might well help patients wake up more calmly after surgery. Fighting the anesthesia, is not a healthy, or relaxed way to go under!

I was terrified once that I was going to wake up during surgery - so when surgery was over and they woke me up I shot straight up screaming "DONT START IM NOT ASLEEP YET" 😂😂😂

One time I was pretty chill about a surgery and I was confused so I sat up and said: “Hey, where’s the sleepy medicine thing?” The surgery was literally over and I hadn’t even noticed I was asleep.

Edit: For anyone saying it’s fake, this is a true story upon which I got my tonsils and adenoids removed to help my breathing and prevent serious seasonal allergies. Shortly after I woke up I began feeling nauseous and started throwing up blood everywhere. My mom said it looked like I got stabbed in the throat, but she does tend to blow things way out of proportion. I don’t remember much since this happened when I was 9, but this is what I did remember.

With all the surgeries I’ve had I’ve never caught it off. I just think this is going to be the best sleep I’ve ever had.

I was so scared I started crying and looked the anesthesia guy in the eyes crying and held his hand while he patted my head till I fell asleep, I know he deals with that daily but I wish I could thank him for being so nice to me.

My mother is a CRNA and she always likes to say "I'll knock you out however I need, even if I need to use my trusty rubber mallet". I'm so proud of her for doing what she does, she's helped countless people go through procedures with no issues and it makes me very happy to know that

I welcomed it with open arms knowing it will be my best sleep in years, and when the nurses woke me up I asked for five more minutes

Brains are like computers. If it loses connection, it’ll try and finish the process when connection’s back 😂

I was a conversation with my surgeon and suddenly he announces he's going home. I replied not until you get this kidney stone out of me. The staff laughed and told me my surgery was over 😅😅 true story 😂😂😂

I did this as a young child getting a pin in my arm after breaking it. They had a really hard time bringing me out of anesthesia in the OR and eventually, after getting a minimal response from me, took me to a recovery room. When the doc came in to check on me a bit later and shook.me to wake me up, I reached up with my uncasted arm and slapped him across the face. My mom still laughs every time she tells the story and I will forever be sorry for hitting the doctor!

I remember waking saying "wait I'm still awake" and then they said "we're already done" and I was like "what".

I „dreamed“ about my friend bringing me cookies after I got my wisdom teeth removed. I told her about it and the next day she showed up with cookies ☺️

I had a lot of surgeries and anesthesias (including several medically induced comas) but the worst one was definitely my gastroscopy “anesthesia” and my transjugular liver biopsy.

I told them multiple times that anesthesias take longer to have an effect on me.
They gave me two or three additional injections of anesthesia, but I just didn’t fall asleep. However, I couldn’t move and started to cry.. the doctor didn’t care if I was asleep or not and just shoved the camera down my throat. The nurses even told him to stop because I wasn’t sleeping yet. Then he threw away my piercings and asked me the dumbest questions ever after the procedure - “ohhh are you already awake? Did you sleep at all? So you felt everything?”. He knew the answers to all of those questions.

The doctors refused to give me anesthesia when I had my transjugular (through the vein in my neck) liver biopsy. They told me that I couldn't have anesthesia because I have to breathe in a specific way during the biopsy / biopsies. I only found out after my transplants that other patients were allowed to have anesthesia and that it was actually “normal” to have an anesthesia during the procedure. After that, I refused to have a transjugular liver biopsy without anesthesia ever again.
The doctor had to try about eight times to hit my jugular vein because the needle / catheter always slipped out.
He took more than 8 biopsies.

I have a very high pain tolerance but at some points the biopsy really hurt.. the moment the catheter passed my heart, my whole chest burned like hell, my heart rate was over 200, I couldn’t breathe and felt like I'm about to pass out. They just didn’t care. I wasn’t allowed to move or talk..

I don't remember any of it but my anesthesiologist said I was talking for about 20 minutes about the history of psychedelic drugs (I had just taken a college course that went into detail about it) but my mom was there to give moral support and heard most of the conversation. She had a lot of questions about my "extracurricular activities" when I woke up.

When I woke up from my anesthesia, I didn’t even realize time had passed. I was so confused and asked “why haven’t you done the surgery yet? Is something wrong?” They all laughed. I had been done with my surgery for like an hour.

I had 2 Surgeries recently and i just ask a lot of questions, testing my Amateur Knowledge and trying to understand what they do! its always fascinating!
I hope they don't mind my curiosity!

When its time for anesthesia, i always enjoy the process, i ask what they will use, what it does to the body, and then i focus on the sensations of the medication working on my body!
I love modern Medicine!

9 years ago, I woke up after surgery and had a little conversation with the nurse tending to me. I've forgotten what it was about but i ended up telling her "You have a lovely bedside manner."

Last week I had my appendix out, I woke up and my teeth would not stop chattering. I wasn't cold but I just really needed someone to comfort me. The nurses got me an extra blanket but after another minute or two I asked the nearest nurse if she could hold my hand, which she did, and I burst into tears 😅
She was so kind. I'm really grateful for her compassion while I was feeling very vulnerable
