How Early Can You Safely Do Bee Hive Splits?

How Early Can You Safely Do Bee Hive Splits? Is a beekeeping youtube video explaining that you shouldn't get into a hurry trying to increase your number of bee hives to early in the spring. Night time cold temperatures can kill the brood, and you could end up killing the whole young split. Wait until night time temperatures are in the upper 40s or 50s to be safe. You have plenty of time to increase your production.

There is a lot to be said about this subject.
If you make a split with a large amount of open brood the bees will be to spread out trying to keep all of it warm, and they will fail. Shake a large amount of nurse bees in with a small amount of open brood and they will cluster around that small amount and have no problem keeping it warm.. I have been keeping bees for 12 years, and they teach me something every year. We only get one spring a year, that’s a short learning period.

Putting a few extra nurse bees in the queen cage with the queen helps keep her warm during shipping to Northern states...

For anybody wondering they have really good bee's! All my bee's are from them. I bought 4 and kept splitting. I have 14 now..

Dave, water your blueberries early spring to keep the soil colder longer. This will cause the bloom to be later and miss the early cold snaps. We do this on all our fruit trees and it works. We are north of you in northern Kansas.

Thank you for sharing the temp ranges. So many just say "this time of the year" and with me being in northern Ohio, "this time of the year" doesn't tell me anything when you're in Georgia, so i really appreciate you taking the time to teach!

I'd rather make half the splits early and heavy than wait until end of March or early April. After 3-4 weeks those splits will be ready to split again. As well as the ones you took brood from.

Just wanted you to know the package of bees I got yesterday. Was awesome! Will be ordering more in April.

I won't even attempt to do splits until mid May up here in northern Illinois. So many new northern beehavers watch the southern beekeepers youtube videos and don't take into account that the south is at least a month to a month and a half ahead of the northern states. Love your videos and would like to say that you know what you are doing.

You can save your blueberries! If you get a frost, got out in early morning BEFORE sun hits them and spray them with a garden hose. If you get rid of the frost before the sun hits it, they will make it. The frost cooks the buds when the sun hits them. The frost causes a greenhouse effect and cooks them.

It's nice to have spare splits nucs to overwinter just in case one of your hives die during the cold winters. Last year I didn't treat for mites and had 2 hives next to each other, the parent colony had mites and died, the offspring colony didn't had any they are a bit meaner but survived and are doing beautiful.

I'm just below Macon and had a 4 frame nuc swarm 2/20 luckily I there and about to move em into 5 frame nuc, then 2/22 one of double deeps swarmed a 7 frame swarm just off my back deck got them in a 10 box then split the double, all are doing fine.

I’m using a double screen board for my first split here in Iowa. If you find them prepping for a swarm you make a split even if it’s early. But at least a double screen board allows the split to share heat with the parent colony.

Hey Dave I watch your videos all the time. Watch yours more than anyone else. Question for you I see you make all those splits but do you move them to one of your other yards to mate? I just made 5 two frame nucs today and plan to finish them and paint Monday. Want to make some spilts this year and raise some queens to sell also. I’ve kept bees nearly fifty years but this will be a first for grafting queens. Your videos and a few others have got me going so here’s hoping. Thanks again for all your video support.
