In growing up my Father was a stern person but, he always said to me "prove me wrong and I'll change my mind..." It was rare but there was the occasional time when I could prove him wrong in his thinking.. Love that man for the fact, aside from being my Father, he could change his way of thinking and support my opinion.. Science should conduct themselves in this manner: Prove me wrong and I'll change my way of thinking.. Believe me, I really had to do my homework to change Dad's mind but I did win a few disagreements.. God I miss that man....

The last 10 minutes of this episode were incredibly powerful. As a scientist myself, I am constantly amazed at how close-minded and fragile many of my colleagues are when it comes to mainstream (read "acceptable") beliefs. As with everything, at least one or two or our major, fundamental understandings of the universe will definitely be shown to be wildly incorrect, but you are still not allowed to question some things.

The work you do is more important than you know. You are reaching 100's of millions of people and asking them, for a second, to question everything. Thats real power.

A few years ago in my composition 2 course in college one of the fist things the instructor told the class was that unless we hold a doctorate in a subject our opinion means nothing. He then went on to proclaim that man-made global warming was an absolute fact and we were not allowed to write anything that would attempt to contradict that fact. The instructor holds a master's degree in classic literature.
