One of the most important parts of this little spin off comic is that Batman was starting to go off the deep end in his anger and brutality when fighting crime. I think in that opening fight he like drives the batmobile over the roof of an apartment complex and injures like 50 people.

Thats why people like Nightwing and Barbara hesitantly side with the joker, because they tried to talk batman off the cliff and he was still getting worse. It ultimately ends with the joker reverting into insanity, but not before imparting the lesson onto batman, making him renew his dedication to the safety of others and the ideals he started his journey with before he let chasing people like the joker cloud his judgement

The annoying part of the comic is that because he becomes sane, everyone just forgets all the murder torture, and hundreds of other crimes he has committed

Goes to show how joker is just keeping himself back. Hell, if Batman joined him without becoming the Batman who laughs, they would rule Gotham without question from anyone
