.............................................................

This is the new BMW X1 - and, for the first time ever, you can also get the X1 as a fully-electric car called the BMW iX1!

Let’s start off with the X1. It’s had some design tweaks from the previous model, including thinner headlights and more angular brake lights, and comes with the option of huge 20-inch alloy wheels for the first time.

The biggest changes come inside the cabin though, where the X1 is completely different to older BMWs because most of the buttons have been removed! The only physical controls are on the steering wheel and floating armrest between the front seats. Instead, you’re meant to control everything by using the ‘Hey BMW’ personal assistant.

You can get the new X1 with a range of petrol and diesel engine options, including some with mild-hybrid tech. BMW has also developed two new plug-in hybrid engines for the X1. The entry-level 25e produces 245hp and can make 0-60 in 6.8 seconds, while the quicker 30e version gets 326hp in total and a 0-60mph time of 5.7 seconds.

The new all-electric BMW iX1, meanwhile, has dual motors that can produce a combined 313hp and accelerate from 0-60mph in 5.7 seconds. It should have a range of 272 miles, which is more than the range of the Mercedes EQA.

The X1 goes on sale later in 2022, with prices starting from just over £35,000 and rising to almost £47,000 for the top-spec 23d M Sport Premiere Pro. Plug-in hybrids and the new electric iX1 will go on sale soon after, with the EV expected to set you back more than £50,000.

So, if you’re in the market for a small SUV, could the X1 or iX1 be for you? Stick with Mat to find out!

This actually looks quite nice and is probably the best looking X1... I can't say the same about some other current BMW models...

My opinion 1 year later: Having seen some of these on the road now, I actually think the styling is too boxy and not as attractive as the camera depicts this car, though of course looks are subjective

This car is semi perfect.
Its size is now getting closer to the X3 and for way less cash!
I guess it would be a huge hit for BMW in terms of sales.
Way better than the GLA

I’m so happy with the new design, both interior as well as the exterior. They aren’t messing with the design as much with the entry level models like the 3 series and X1 compared to the others.
Interior preferable compared to the iX.

I love this design! They found the good proportions to make it aggressive without doing too much at the same time. Wonderful job from BMW!

Getting rid of physical buttons has got to be the worst trend in modern car design (even worse than BMW's ginormous kidney grills). Having to use a touch screen or a wonky voice command system for climate control or rudimentary media functionality is an absolute dealbreaker for me. I won't buy a car that forces me to do that. Not only is it a safety concern, it is just awful usability.

So nice to see the split headlamp disease doesn't infected the entry level BMW, there is still hope for the next gen 3 series. But i have a bad feeling for 5 and X5

I got mine delivered on 4th Oct 2022, now before we jump to any conclusion lemme say this, this is my first luxury car purchase. Lovely car, I got the UTAH orange and xdrive 18d version. I am very proud :) Best compact SUV of 2002 (coz test driven Mercedes A class and Audi q3)

BMW remembered where they placed their design book. This is much better than their current lineup besides the 3 series

First time in a while BMW makes an enjoyable car to look at from all angles. Love this SUV.

Never liked the x1, but I’m loving this design. Happy that bigger Models retain the iDrive controller. X1 owners may prefer touchscreen only

BMW are taking a positive turn, the m3 looks good and this does too hopefully they see the positive response and change their design approach

“How many times do you wanna change the thumbnail for the video?”
Matt: “yes”

I currently have a 2017 X1 and I do think the new model looks a lot better from the side without the crease line at the door handle level .
Not sure about the larger front grill though.
Let's just hope they've cured the road noise from the run flat tyres on poor road surfaces.
