It’s weird to consider that Shinji’s shikai and bankai have inverted strengths and weaknesses.
In 1v1 fights, Shinji’s shikai is great (in theory) because it completely screws up his opponent’s sights which allows Shinji to gain a serious advantage over said opponent. However, against multiple opponents, it wouldn’t be practical because it takes too long to activate and the odds of ALL of his opponents patiently waiting for Shinji to finish the release are pretty slim.
Shinji’s bankai is PERFECT for dealing with multiple enemies because it activates almost instantly and will save Shinji the trouble of fighting because his opponents will just kill each other off. However, against a single opponent, the bankai is completely worthless because the opponent would have no one to attack or be attacked by.

However, a weakness I’d imagine that is shared by both releases is their chance for disastrous friendly fire if allies looked at it. The shikai would completely disorient any ally around Shinji and the bankai would cause a bloodbath of friendly fire. Granted, we do see Shinji use the shikai to what would have been great effect in a 4v1 against Aizen if not for HIS own release but that’s because Toshiro wasn’t looking in that direction.
This ultimately paints a picture that Shinji is only really an effective fighter in select circumstances.
