What are Schemas? | Coherence Therapy - Part 2 of 5

Let's talk about SCHEMAS according to Coherence Therapy.

In this first second video in my Coherence Therapy series, we take a deeper look at schemas, particularly how they are structured. Schemas generally consist of two component parts: one that knows about the nature of some suffering or problem and how to anticipate its arrival, and the other that knows how to avoid or manage that suffering. In this video I go over how understanding the structure of schemas helps us know how to work with them clinically. In other words, we can chose to update the schema in relation to its predictions around danger or suffering, or we can update the schema around how it has learned to prevent that danger or suffering (in other words, updating the 'solution side' of the schema).
When we can update our schemas using memory reconsolidation, it is possible to achieve transformational change. That is why understanding schemas is so critical to helping our clients, particularly those who have experienced trauma. This is the goal of Coherence Therapy, although it can be achieved through many different experiential therapies. For instance, the basic structure of schemas described in this video does match onto how IFS conceptualizing the two main types of parts (exiles--that hold the memory of the suffering itself; and protector parts--that hold the knowledge of how to avoid that suffering).

Wonderful! I loved what you said about the specificity of schemata. In pop psychology, people don't go further than those "negative beliefs" lists

Thank you Dr.Tori. I have been devouring all the books on this approach. I deeply appreciate how you simplify some of the language around the symptom requiring schema's problem/solution and clarify that both can be made actively conscious and discomforted for reconsolidation. In absolute awwww and gratitude 🙏

How do you discover the childhood story behind the schema? In the example, you explain what was the situation this patient had as a child. But being adults, and in less obvious cases, how do you discover behaviors that were going on in childhood that created a schema?

Hi, thank you for your insight on schemas. I have just discovered the existence of these and am now starting to look at them. I am curious as to your thoughts on ketamine infusion therapy for mood stabilization. Would this sort of therapy help or hinder the exploration of schemas? Thank you.

Is it possible to discover our own schemas (core beliefs) without a therapist? Are their resources (youtube videos, web articles or books) on discovering our schemas (core beliefs)? Please give a list

Hi Tori. Love your videos!!! I'm trying to find the one where you spoke about how some memories are stored in a part of the brain that is unaware of time pasing. Maybe I'm remembering it wrong but if anyone knows what I'm thinking of please help cause it's driving me nuts, haha.

There's "Schema Therapy". How does it compare to Coherence Therapy?
