If you find yourself saying "I don't know" a lot in therapy, then it may be that your experiences earlier in life taught you that it was important for you to learn to disconnect from your emotions. While leaning to disconnect from feelings might have been adaptive in childhood, later in life, this avoidance of emotions can become a reflexive pattern, making it hard for us to know ourselves and establish emotionally intimate relationships. Therapy can help us to gain awareness of our schemas and hopefully rewire our unconscious beliefs that something terrible will happen to us if we allow ourselves to feel deeply and share these feelings with another person. #mentalhealth #therapy
