How to verify your identity with the IRS to receive your tax return

If you filed your income taxes close to the April 18 deadline, you may still be waiting on your tax return. But would the IRS ask for your personal information? One man wrote into VERIFY asking if it was legit that the IRS would send him a letter in the mail asking him to create an account at ID.com and submit photos of his driver's license.

In this video, VERIFY reporter Meghan Bragg speaks with tax experts about this process and explains why it is a legitimate request from the IRS for those who filed income taxes and are still waiting on their federal income tax return.

There are reasons why the IRS may ask you to confirm your identify. If you show up on any identity theft registry, for instance. Until the IRS is able to confirm your identity, it will not be able to process your tax return. #VERIFY #WakeUpCLT #Taxes

And it could take up to nine weeks to get your tax return after verifying your identity with the IRS.

the DMV in my state had a data breach and everyone in the state was effected. Which means EVERY person in my state is going to have to verify their Identity to the IRS THANKS DMV .

I’ve filed the SAME EXACT TAX RETURN WITH THE SAME DEPENDENTS, AND SAME STATUS! FOR 25 YEARS! I RECEIVED A REFUND FREEZE. THEN A LETTER. I HAD TO SET AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE IRS TO SELF IDENTIFY. APPOINTMENTS WERE BACKLOGGED 60 DAYS!!! FINALLY I GET THERE THE BE TOLD I HAVE A CREDIT OF FAMILY SICK LEAVE THAT WAS ONLY FIR 2021-2022. I WENT BACK THROUGH MY 1040 RETURN AND I DONOT HAVE A CREDIT OF SUCH. I CALLED AND FINALLY SPOKE TO SOMEONE AND THEY SAID MY SCHEDULE 3 WAS TO HIGH AND THEY MAY BE THE PROBLEM.
