Attic Vases part three | THREE - STAGE FIRING

The firing process comprised three stages: oxidation, reduction and again oxidation.
In the first oxidizing stage the ancient craftsmen raised the temperature in the kiln by supplying air (oxygen): the firing chamber communicated with the lower part of the kiln, where the fuel was burning, while an opening towards the top of the kiln allowed the gases formed by combustion to escape. When the desired temperature was reached.................
All these signs indicate that the ancient potters of Attica were not only talented but also had a high level of technological knowhow.

Started my research at classics dept qu queensland . You don't have to reduce so low. oxides up to 950 degrees, then reduction, ten add a green wood compoent, close the kiln . cool to 750 degrees not 800. the sintering of ferrites is 780 degrees, you see you make these test tiles below 780 degrees you can drawn these out of the kiln with out loosing the black gloss. if you reduce from 800 degrees up to 950. there is a good chance the black gloss will look like gun metal. the anicnet greeks also made a green patina this material is with in the terrasig, my test pieces are ina show case in the Ashmoleum museum, Micheal Vikkers .
