What Is Overdrive Gear On A Car-And How To Use It

In this video, I tell you about the overdrive gear in a car. I specifically tell you what overdrive is and how to use it when driving a vehicle. Many older vehicles had an overdrive button that allowed you to control the highest gear in the transmission. Newer vehicles mostly have overdrive built right into the transmission so that the car's computer can make the decision about whether to engage the highest gear or not. Either way, you should know how it works and when you should be using it.

Good info. I have a 2003 Ford f250 super duty with an automatic transmission that has overdrive. For more than 10 years, I never used overdrive. Been towing cars daily and it has 370, 000 miles and I haven't changed the transmission fluid since we bought it used at 170, 000 miles. It does not want to give up. Ford, build this trucks strong.

It's also handy to turn it off when you need to pass someone quickly and you're already at cruising speeds. It revs up your RPMs and helps with acceleration.

I SLAM it with OD off on the launch from a stop. Then hit 40 mph and Slam it into OD like turbo boost. Then slow it down and slam it into underdrive when you hit 40 mph and below to downshift for engine braking and tight cornering. Overdrive is sport mode for me. 2006 Sentra SE & 2001 Camry LE
