It looks like space ship, smooth housing with less ribs, Aisin transmissions found on several car and truck manufacturers.

Aisin Warner/Toyota A43D, AW 03-71. All hydraulic except for the OD solenoid. Used in many Toyota and Volvo vehicles including 2WD Trucks from the 1980 Hilux up to the 2004 Tacoma. They were even used in 6 cylinder, turbo charged, and HD applications such as I6 Celica/Supra, turbo Volvo's, dually box trucks, and motor homes. They are overbuilt for the car and small truck applications they were installed in and can operate flawless for many years with minimum care. They are also easy to remove and re-install in vehicles and easy to rebuild sharing many parts with other AW transmissions.

My a43d goes in first when it's hot.

The guy drove it that way for over 25000 miles. I re-did all mounts, and bushings on the drive line, even installed brand new torque converter. It still slips.

Manny swap or bust.

Hey guys, do any of you perhaps know if the valve bodies on the a40 series are interchangeable? Specifically, can you use a A43DL valve body on a A43D?

Hi! The A43DL doesn't have the ECT computer control system, the L in the model number is a reference for Toyota's hydraulically governed transmissions. The A43DE is controlled by the Toyota ECT system.

That one the Toyota Aisin-Warner A40-A46DL series is totally different from the Toyota and Lexus Aisin-Warner A340 series.

other names for that A40-A46DL are for example in RWD volvos they call them the AW70 (A42D), AW71 (A43D), and AW72 (A44D)
The AW70 was in the 240 and 740s non turbo models (naturally aspirated).
The AW71 was in the Turbo and V6 models like the early 240 turbos, 740 turbos, 760 turbos, 760 V6, 780 bertone turbo, 780 bertone V6, and the 940's.
The AW72 was in the DOHC turbo 740's and 940's.
Aisin called this A40 series the AW 03-70, AW 03-71, and AW 03-72.

Excellent transmission. Too bad the A44DLE was attached to the EXTREMELY CRAPPY H27 V6 Suzuki engine in the Grand Vitaras. Worst. Engine. EVER. And don´t say I didn´t maintained it. I´m a maintenance engineer and know my way around cars and motorcycles.
