This is a breakdown of the easiest way to avoid your kayak flipping upside down. It is a small change but a big output difference especially if you can apply it in multiple ways.

Really good advice and something I have been focusing on. I call it “positive paddling”.

One of the best kayaking instructional videos I have ever seen. It is simple, straight forward, and easy to grasp. It essentially shows us how to use the tools we already have, as a means to prevent a flip, rather than having to try to remember specialty strokes and execute them perfectly at the exact right moment. Forward strokes are by far the strokes we do most often and practice makes perfect. So if you can use a stroke you practice a lot and don't have to think about, you will execute that much faster and that much more effectively. It is so obvious that a forward stroke will stabilize the boat that we don't even think about it. Its like "that's too simple". But simple is usually best. Thanks for sharing this. You will be responsible so helping prevent thousands of unnecessary flips and possibly even save a life or two.

This is great advice. I recently picked up a tip from a long time kayaker friend who said to paddle the front third of your boat. This keeps you upright and aggressive and really helps. A slightly different way of saying the same thing

This is excellent advice, I remember my instructor saying best brace is a good forward paddle stroke.

Definitely true. The hard bit is to: Not Panic, and KEEP Paddling!

Hopefully improvers will pick up on that need to keep paddling! It's easy to forget in the heat of the moment.

A side exercise is to stand in the water (swimming pools are nice for this) and practice the pulling and pushing of water with your paddle, along with the transition to low and high braces for support while actively leaning over to the support side.

You can do a dozen in a minute, as there is no boat recovery needed, just the effective action of the arms and blade in the water. Water at navel height for low braces, and water at armpit height for high braces. There is no fear of falling in - you are already there!

Good stuff and thanks for your videos. On my last session last year someone suggested to me to take a stroke going through a wave so that you have 3 points of contact with the water (bow, stern, paddle), rather than waiting with paddle level so I could take a stroke on whatever side is needed. Made sense, and this just reinforces it. Hope to be able to get out on the river again soon. Also struck me that this is perhaps 'proactive paddling' more than offensive. Keeps you in control.

“If you think you’re going upside down, take a forward stroke” one thing leads to another and you do a sick eardip.

Thanks so much for this, it makes so much sense. Our instructors call this PLF - paddle like flippityflip :)

It’s interesting that this same advice applies to motorcycles. In many situations you are most stable under forward power. Don’t panic snd try to correct the tilt directly, just goose it.

All in all, love this video. Especially in slower/spicier boats this comes in handy

I never really thought about it that way but I will be implementing this because I don’t like swimming 👍

I just realized that is what I have been doing a lot. I still don't think it will work in all situations, but it does a lot when I am river running. Going over a drop down a chute it is a different game for me. Even then it is more a stroke rather than a typical brace.

Yep! I still meet club high brace die hards who disagree with me when I tell them to do this though!

Thank you Seth! Just had all my kids sit down and watch that with me so they could hear it from somewhere else besides from my mouth lol....
