How to AVOID FLICKER and STROBING While Filming

Many artificial lights cause a flickering or strobing effect when you're filming in slow motion, but this doesn't always have to be the case. Here's a quick tip on how to avoid this flicker.

In my last video we covered the post production side of things, how to fix flicker if you've filmed something without realizing that a light source is strobing, but for this video we cover how to avoid this problem in the first place.

It's a really simple tip, so the video is short. In a future video, if you'd like, I can go into much more detail on framerates and shutter speed and how they affect each other.

And a Panasonic GH4:

A follow-up to our last video! Hopefully these tutorials are helpful to you.

We're working on another travel film right now (Switzerland) and hope to have that ready in the next couple of weeks, so keep an eye out for that!

Hi, your tips are really helpful.👍👍
But i thought the shutter speed should be the double of the frame rate. Does that matter in making slomo video? Thx

cool vid man nice to see that your uploading videos to teach people how to use a camera the way you do because I am always thinking how you pull of some of your shots! It would be really cool if you could do a video on drone video thanks.

I was getting a very slight amount of flutter at 1/50 of a second at 24fps with a gimbal on my action camera. Im filming in extremely low light, do i have a chance with a Action 4 📷 of elimination of the flutter? Thx!

Great video dude! short and simple.
im in europe. so we got the 50hertz lights. Lets say I want to shoot something in slow-motion but under TL lights: I choose 100fps, 200 shutterspeed. If I slow down the footage, this should not create flickering right? Can slowing down the footage create problems if there arent any in full speed?

What shutter angel does it the best when filming 120 fps ?

Also keep in mind ntsc vs pal. In europe pal i best as electricity runs about 50hz (lamps, tvs etc) and ntsc runs at 60 hz. Most pro cameras let you choose. so if you have lights and screens in europe, best is to film at max 50fps. If you film 60fps you will get flickering regardles of other settings like shutterspeed.

Our Nikon DSLR d5200.. on auto setting but manually focused it's not so much that the light flickers... but it does seem unstable... sometimes lighter then suddenly a bit lighter and when the person moves on camera it doesn't stay completely in focus. Any ideas what could be wrong?

But as far I know for slo motion video we keep the shutter speed double the frame rate so didn't you face any problem in slo mo when shooting at 120fps and 125 shutter speed at the same time

Thanks for the great tip! Helped me a lot when everybody just talking about 180-rule. Sometimes you should break rules to get better end result :) made me subscribe to your channel!

Doesn’t the shutterspeed that low make the video look “drunk” in theory? Or does this not apply as much as it would with a frame rate of 24fps bc it’s in slow motion at 120? I’m filming my first wedding this month and this is my fear!!!

Any idea on why certain clips I put in the timeline will flicker bright to dark? It’s not from a light source. It does it on playback. However when I play that same clip in windows media player it has no flickering and is totally fine. The flickering is even reflected in the scopes.
