Sketching Root Locus Part 1

Sketching a root locus by hand can be done by following some simple rules. However, more important than actually being able to sketch to plot is being able to use our knowledge to design compensators in the S-plane. Understanding how poles and zeros affect a closed loop control system allows you to predict what you need in order to build a stable system just by looking at the root locus.

One of my favorite controls books is "Control Theory Second Edition" by JR Leigh.  There are a lot of great books that describe the theory and show you the math, but this book explains most of the concepts in words. I think engineers can get a good understanding of "why" the theory as opposed to"what's" the theory from this book.
