Finland and Sweden's NATO accession has nearly cut off Russia from the Baltic Sea, highlighting Kaliningrad's strategic vulnerability. Despite global tensions, Russia maintains alliances, notably with China, which has become its main trading partner. Discover how Russia's ambitions in the Arctic, particularly around the Svalbard archipelago, could impact global geopolitics. 🇷🇺❄️

China absolutely has no claim to any place in the Artic.

Russia can’t even take the complete Donbas region in Ukraine that they have a long land border with. They lost their crumbling Black Sea fleet to Ukrainian missiles and drones. I think their ability to pull off anything complicated anywhere else in the world is highly suspect.

Wrong wrong wrong. Norway technically own Svalbard, AND is Norwegian territory 100%.

Norway Sweden and Finland have announced they will triple their military strength in Baltic north.
Making Russian northern bases in extremely weak military strategic position.

Russia's arctic fleet is probably as well maintained as the rest of their equipment

Nato should unilaterally declare Svalbard a Norwegian territory. Putin cannot argue against that and remain in Ukraine, it's from his own play book.

Norway will never ever ever give up on any part of Svalbard, no chance.

Aside from the threat of Nukes, Russia can't do much. Their aim is beyond their grasp

Svalbard is still Norwegian. Russians are allowed but unless the Russians intend to seize it by force they can't take it. Bear Island is Norwegian, also. There are Russian coal mines there. They have anthracite. I don't think the Norwegians are going to allow the Russians to muscle in.

Any Russian move on Svalbard would trigger a full-scaled NATO defense.

Great video. I'm slightly irked by the use of Mercator projection that makes a country the size of Croatia (2:10) look twice as big as Norway when it's one-tenth the size?

This type of information is important to get correct. Norwegian sovereignty over Svalbard is undisputed. The Norwegian Svalbard Act of 1925 literally made Svalbard a full part of Norway. It is completely controlled and ruled by Norway. However, the treaty also says that Norway's rule on Svalbard is restricted by certain limitations - such as taxation, surrounding environment, a non-discriminatory policy, and military restrictions. The non-discrimination policy says that although all people have access to Svalbard, they still need to follow norwegian laws and regulations. Spreading the wrong information, such as "Svalbard is techically not part of Norway", can be dangerous if enough people say it. It legitimizes the arguments of Russian leadership. Just look at what happened in the early stages of the Ukraine war.

There was a dispute between Russia and Norway on how to draw border in the Barents Sea, but we ended that dispute in 2010 and signed an agreement. There is no dispute over Svalbard, that is Norwegian territory.

Norway-Russia have pretty much always had good relations, the same can't exactly be said for Sweden-Finland and Russia. The Arctic desert of Svalbard is not only a terrible place for a military conflict, but of all the infantry units in the world, among the worst to fight in that environment is the Norwegians.

I served in Norwegian Arctic long-range patrol, after a long and cold winter with nonstop patrols, finally a week with leave came. I looked forward to go down south, see the Sun and party, but then some platoon mates came up with the idea to head up to Svalbard and do a ski expedition. The argument was, we was close by, had the gear and skill set, would be a chill vacation. I declined, but the others went and when I saw them again, they would not shut up how nice that trip to Svalbard had been. For a moment, I regretted going down south and partying with pretty Oslo girls, lol.

If an archipelago the size of Croatia is "tiny", do the smaller islands even count as islands?
