When the UH-1H Iroquois helicopters, nicknamed "Huey," were introduced to the world in the Vietnam conflict, it was unimaginable that they would forever change the modern concept of warfare. Immortalized by cinema and television in countless adventures, it is considered the most important American helicopter of all time.

Due to their intensive use and brilliant performance, the Huey became the "cavalry" and the rescue squadrons in many of the major contemporary conflicts. Besides the United States, it is still operated in countries such as New Zealand, Colombia, Bolivia, Canada, Australia, Mexico, Spain, Chile, and also in Brazil.

First introduced into military service in 1955, it went into production in 1962 as the UH-1.

The Huey was the protagonist of legendary attack missions, escort duties, airborne assaults, and combat rescues.

The last units were manufactured in 1976, with a total of 16,000 units produced, of which approximately 7,000 participated in the Vietnam War.

The average time a marine spent in combat in the Pacific in WW2 was 40 days. Because of helicopters that went up to 315 days in Viet Nam.

I was a 67Y, and miss flying on Huey's.

I took my first flight in a Huey around April 23rd, 1975. I state "around" that date because my destination was not in Asia but about 100 mi. SSE of Cameron, LA. It was a Rowan drilling rig in the Vermillion block about a week before the fall of Saigon. A bit of a coincidence, but not as significant as what was happening halfway across the world. All the UH1-H Hueys with that mundane job were aircraft which had not been needed after "Vietnamization" reduced the need for them overseas.

What truly set the HUEY apart was the fact that we had quite a few kids trying to "outlive" their fathers expectations. And they didnt disappoint.

My Grandfather was woumded in Nam (took a round to the kneecap) and i believe if i remember correctly that a Huey is what came and picked him up to take him to get it looked at. He got a Purple Heart and Honorable Discharge. He was drafted into that war and was very bitter about it for many, Many years.
