Also, you can fill it almost full of cold water and freeze it to get the dents out...

Thanks Blackie. Great tips to help me restore an old canteen to a safe condition. As usual, you’re a great site to have the helpful tips. Best to you from WNC

Surgitate (sp) is my new favorite word! haha! Great tip. I do about the same thing to a couple old percolators I'm not ready to give up. Thanks Blackie!

i got an old boy scout canteen of ebay. Great condition, still had the buttons and button clasps on it, still had the fabric, still original emblem on it, not that rusted, only problem is that the scout that had it had spit his sunflower seed shells into it and let it sit for years. i got to cleaning it out with dish soap and salt water just to get the main saliva and seed out. For main cleaning for it, this was really useful. Now its back to its original form. I dont want to let the old Boy Scout stuff rot away, Its time to put it back in use, the old scout garrison caps, use em, old berets, use em, i love to use the boy scout canteen because the boy scouts now just make cheap clear plastic canteens!

Great tip and one that I needed! Thanks! That canteen is the shape of the old style bed warmers, boil up some water in it, wrap it in some non artificial fibre clothes/blanket/towel ect. so you don't get burnt, stick it in your sleeping bag/bedroll on a cold night. Hot water bottle!

Looks like that canteen was also meant to be used as a kettle on the fire. Pretty cool design. I never noticed that before.

Hey blacky, i am collecting canteens of interest, and i got this ww2 stainless steel one that i'm refurbishing, but the inside has a slightly tacky film in it, i've tried the salt method, a-jax, and boiling water, but it wont come out. any ideas?

Would alcohol be okay instead of water? I feel like you’d get more abrasion from the salt as it doesn’t dissolve in water.
