It saddens me to think that all this time that western democracies (well, Australia and New Zealand aren't really in the west, but you know what I mean...) have been upholding civil liberties in the past, the real reason they were doing it was because they didn't have technology or means to do otherwise. Now that it's a simple matter of engineering to trample the rights of whole populations, we're just as eager as East Germany once was to make sure no one has any communication that can't be intercepted. It makes me long for the days when no one could imagine a way you could spy on tens of millions of people at the same time. We were much more "principled" back then.

The difference between a democracy and dictatorship: A democracy would want to protect the privacy of their citizens while a dictatorship would want them to have as little privacy as possible. Laws about Internet privacy and such things really reveal the state of the government.
