Find the pH of a Buffer after Adding HCl

preview_player
Показать описание
You use the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation to calculate the pH of a buffer, and you can use MOLES of conjugate base and MOLES of weak acid in the "base over acid" section. Adding HCl will *increase* the amount of weak acid there is, and decrease the amount of conjugate base by the same amount.
These affect the ratio that is logged, so adding a little bit of HCl doesn't change the pH significantly.

you are the best, the way u explain things make life easier and you also choose problem ideas that most teachers don't explain. you are a life saver :)

When you add that volume of acid, won't the volume of the buffer be affected hence won't there be change in the volume of the buffer?

wow, this is much easier than using an ice table (also saves space)! thank you so much!!! i was pulling my hair out a while ago going crazy at not being able to grasp the problem in front of me. now i can easily solve it haha!

Thank you so much, I was even stressed failing to solve these kind of problems. Much simpler, appreciated!

my lecturer taught this for 5 day repeatedly, nobody understood.

Does anybody how to calculate the pH if there is let’s say 11ml of the HCL that overwhelms the buffer neutralising the conjugate base? What equation do we use?

Very appreciative! I surprised you didn’t use an ice table to solve, but I understand the concept a lot better because you chose not to! Thanks again!

What would i do if the moles of HCl added is higher than the moles of the buffers? For example the question I'm tackling is "0.250M of HCO3- in 500ml with 0.350M of H2CO3 in 500ml. If you add 0.2mol of HCl what is the Ph?"

I tried your method but since there is so much HCl added, the whole thing neutralizes and I can't figure out how to get an answer

Would anything change if H2SO4 is added instead or the whole process is same ?
