Pro tip, use coffee filters to clean thermal pastes, not paper towels. They are lint free and wont tear when cleaning pcb’s.

23:06 PSA: Jay got the VRM setup a little wrong. Both banks of VRMs he pointed to are Vcore. The Vmem is a 4 phase and the phases are split up surrounding the memory chips and between the Vcore VRM

Phil, cracking up behind the camera, is a fundamental part of these videos. This was very relaxing and enjoyable. Very appreciated.

Pro tip. Running the card on air at load for 30mins or so makes it easier to get the heatsink off the PCB. I also recently went with an alpha cool block and found that all the pads are cut to the correct size making it a lot easier than having to cut with EK

It would have make sense for the 3090 with memory chips at the back. For the 4090 it is basically burning and throwing money away going with an active backplate. And this is me with an active backplate 3090.

I dont know why but i find Jays videos so therapeutic

To get those magnetized covers off you just push in on one of the ends of the magnetized cover itself and it pops up for you to grab. There's space under the end of them for this purpose.

I upgraded 3 3090 cards with active backplate waterblocks. One block was EK, the other two were Bykski. After having done that, I really can't justify spending the money on EK blocks. The Bykski blocks ran within 2 degrees of the EK on both memory and GPU and at approx half the cost. While I really do prefer the look of EK's blocks, for the price/performance I can't justify the 4090 one.

These are the types of videos I love. Learning how to watercool from someone who has done it for years!

Silly comment, but Iwent through so many screwdrivers in my life until I got my iFixit kit(same he’s using). It’s got every bit I need for smaller stuff and they’re so good I haven’t needed to sharpen or replace any bits. Well worth the $20 I spent to pick it up.

When you were applying the thermal pads for the active backplate (the backside of the GPU) you forgot to add some small pads to the 'top' and 'bottom' sides of the central chip. That could cause problems due to lack of any active airflow to remove the heat. And it doesn't look like there'll be much passive airflow inside, too, for heat removal.

The "wiped too aggressively" thing reminds me of an old gem: "Today I got in touch with my inner self. I am never buying cheap toilet paper ever again."

I just love that Jay made perfect tutorial on how to mount active backplate to 4090 as if everyone was going to buy this combo 😂

Main thing not addressed - some higher end cards like the 3090 have memory modules on the back / backplate side which run hot and thats why you should consider the water block.

I have never seen a card taken apart before and i could not describe my face when he held this little board in his hand and said that this is the 4090. Legit 98% just for cooling😂

Just when no one was asking if they needed to cool the backplate of their card, both Jay and Der8eur make videos about backplate coolers within 24 hours of each other.

I'd love to see his friends build when it's finished. Esp would like to see the comparison between the GPU temps, to see if there's any difference in the two different water block's performances

quick tip for people wanting to keep track of screws in their active plate builds take some cardboard and use a marker and sketch out the layout of the card and screws and poke the screws into the cardboard, wont lose em, they wont roll and you'll know where they belong.

i know it might not be possible, but i'd love to see an actual comparison of the active back plate vs not active backplate on performance. keep up the good work JTC team!
