Nikon D800 Vs D4 - Hands on Comparison

The Nikon D4 and D800 (& D800E) are both about to hit the market, and for those looking to upgrade their current gear. I went Hands on with both cameras during my recent trip to Japan, at Nikon's office in Tokyo, and there's a question that needs asking, "Which one should I get, the D4 or the D800?", asking "which one is better the Nikon D4 or the Nikon D800?" is pointless, because they're both "better" at certain things, so let's break down what those are... and look at the new Video shooting "D-Movie" modes too.

Yes. you will get a higher bitrare recording (potentially that is, of course it will vary depending on the deck you're using to actually record the output of course) than the built in codec.

@zonikel Nope, still got some more material for further "tales form Japan" type stuff.

Little bit sad you couldn't figure that out on your own, given all the information and real worth examples of similar shooting situations I gave... but yes, Robellislol is correct, D4 will make life easier than the D800 in those conditions (he's wrong about the build quality though, they're both built to the same standards and are both VERY tough)

@volkswagenginetta D4; One CF & one XQD slot. D800; One CF & one SD (SDHC, SDXC) slot

Quick question Blunty3000, does uncompressed HDMI video out to an external recorder mean higher bitrate? I need to know. thanks in advance and by the video!

Cool, I look forward to the reviews. Have you seen footage from the D800E? Maybe moire will only be a rare problem, like it was with the 5D mkII.

Just wondering, are you going to do a review of the nikon D3200

Either you have no released a video in a LONG time or youtube's new "broken" format has hidden them all from me. Anyway, very happy to see another video from you. You present tech info in a coherant useful way. Personally 300 is my max on a camera, but this is still interesting.

In regards to fps shooting speed, has Nikon done anything with there buffer?, its all good to have 11fps continuous shooting but not if you can only shoot 15 - 20 frames before it lags in order to write to the memory card and drops down to 3-5fps. Have you got any specs on how many frames the D4 can take in burst mode???

Great video mate. I just bought the D800 and couldn't be happier! This camera can do ANYTHING! Landscape, sport, you name it! It's fast! Same multi cam autofocus system as D4. And another thing...i noticed many people are arguing about how to pronounce Nikon. No matter what you pronounce....do it PROPERLY or don't say it at all....no wonder the english language has been butchered so much!

Being the type of guy who's still not upgraded from his 2megapixel sony cyber-shot he got back in '04 this video terrifies me. Either way, great content as usual!

When I shoot video with my canon EF 5D Mark II, I sometimes use my conurus adapted zeiss 17-35mm. Really great lens, but must hit the digital magnify to keep checking focus, as even with a swing down loop on the back screen, there are not enough pixels to give me the kind of info I need for perfect sharpness. My dream is to have a back screen with the kind of detail in the very new Ipad III's. Either that, or some plug in eyewear to help me focus.

So this must mean that the Nikon D4 and the Nikon D800 have a significant advantage one the Canon 5D Mark III and the Canon 1DX at least as far as the quality of the video is concerned, or the option to record a better bitrate of video. Wow!!!! thank goodness I asked and thanks for the quick reply. this actually is an important aspect to me.

Would love to see a DSLR with 4K video mode, or at least a RAW mode, which doesn't use h264 compression

If you scale down the d800's sensor to a lower megapixel resolution, then the performance will be improved to go along with it.
