That sounds EXACTLY like my 1995 Chevy Tahoe, same engine.

Do a valve adjustment with the engine running, make sure it gets up to operating temp before taking off the valve covers. You can use a little piece of cardboard to block the oil from spilling. Just take off both valve covers and do both sides at once, or your engine will cool too much between the time it takes to put the cover back on and get the other one off. On the passenger side, I had to remove the AC line into the compressor to get the valve cover off.

It was a crank bearing everybody. This was years ago. XD

Found out mine was missing a bolt in the exhaust manifold, I couldn’t believe I missed it. I put a new bolt in and it stopped

That is a worn bearing on the canecting rod at the crank the piston is hitting the head.

Sound like the lifters hitting the valve cover or low oil

Sounds like a lifter but I don't think running it without an air filter will help

I got either the exact same problem, or similar prob.
94 Chevy 1500, and while moving some furnitures for a friend, the "Clucking" noise popped out of nowhere.
Just changed spark plugs and wires, they are in both good condition.
Still runs, but that noise is just way scary. The noise will sometimes get quieter, while sometimes it gets louder.
Have you figured out the prob?
