Unlike Palpatine, his master Darth Plagius had a healthy fear of the Jedis power, especially those with a strong mastery of the force and a lightsaber. Before the events of the phantom menace, Plagius cautioned Palpatine that there was a Jedi who could quite likely beat Palpatine And even himself in a duel. What's more, this Jedi was not rigidly held to the the doctrine of the Jedi and Plageus worried about the future of the Sith grand plan if he ever became grand master of the Jedi order. This Jedi did not believe that the Order should be subservient to the republic as he saw it as a weakness, a weakness Palpatine and Plagius wished to exploit. This powerful Jedi was possibly the most gifted light saber duelest the order had seen in many years. His name was Dooku. At the this time, Dooku was a powerful Jedi master and Palpatine, only a sith apprentice. it is very likely Dooku was more powerful than the future emperor during this period. Ultimately though, Palpatine would corrupt the count, eliminating the threat of a Jedi order led by dooku.

You can tell dooku was a great jedi because he is probably the most calm, collective, and smart Sith lord and I believe you could actually talk to him if you wished to.

Honestly, I really like how this worked out though. Plagueis said Dooku could wreck Palpy in a duel, so the apprentice pulls the greatest twist of fate and makes it so that they will NEVER have to. It's brilliant

Dooku also had plans on trying to test if General Grievous was force sensitive. Thankfully he wasn't, or he'd be an absolute monster, helping Dooku to overthrow the empire

Dooku had a point with many things and in my opinion he was once a great Jedi but eventually became a great Sith but was always a good person

Plo Koon, Windu, Luke, Anakin, Yoda, Obi Wan. Hell even Doku could've beaten Palpatine in a duel. Palpatine rarely relied on his dueling. And every time he did duel the challengers (Kit Fisto, Savage Opress, Maul) weren't a realistic threat. Other times he either lost of drawed.
