Despite having been a staple in the gaming world for decades, music games have seen a decline in popularity the last few years. But with the release of Thumper and REZ Infinite for the PlayStation VR, rhythm games seem poised for a comeback, thanks to the immersive aspect of virtual reality. Please no more plastic instuments.
Thumper shows how a modern take on the genre can be done.

You can't revive what isn't dead. But sure, it could give the genre a boost.

DJ Hero would've been better if they kept adding new songs

Amplitude and Thumper are great though

What made music games popular last gen was that it was a social experience. VR is too antisocial to dramatically make the genre popular again

I never really understood why they died in the first place. I loved them.

I would like a guitar hero or rock band, if. and only if, I didn't have to spend hundreds on music... I hate DLC. Idk how licensing works, but I find it stupid to have all this music n not be able to put it in one game without making me broke and unhappy.

well, its really got me into music games, when previously i had ZERO interest in them. Thumper, REZ and Harmonix VR are fucking awesome!
So yes, VR can most certainly help the genre if it can bring in new fans such as myself.

As a Vive owner I completely agree, sadly There's no Rez for us in sight (which as a Rez/Child of Eden fan is pretty devastating); but with things like audioshield and soundstage, the marriage of sight, sound, and touch is in full effect here. However traditional instrument rhythm gaming is not what VR excels at, it's an actuality obscurity and the bizarre, the more abstract the experience, the more you get out of it as it's not replication of reality, but instead the creation of a new one.

Tools like the Vive have a great place for a lot of genres but the rhythm game works especially well as it can be abstracted and moulded for VR whilst something like an fps is atm too grounded in its own conventions to giv a lot of the experimentation one wants from VR, so I think music games' revival is as much due to the conventionless nature of the genre as opposed to some inherent thing that makes it work

I've envisioned this since PSVR was announced. Project Diva in VR would be amazing if there were new interesting ways in which you can interact with the rhythm of the songs. It seems like Sega are definitely incorporating VR into this franchise already so I really hope they bring something like this soon. Icons flying around in vr space that you hit with the move controllers would be so much fun and so immersive, it would also encourage us music fans to get off the couch and put some energy into our gameplay too... I can't wait!
