Aristotle, Metaphysics, bk. 1 | Philosophy's Origin in Wonder | Philosophy Core Concepts

This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.

This Core Concept video focuses on Aristotle's work, the Metaphysics and examines his discussion in book 1 about the origins of philosophy. He maintains that, once human beings have a modicum of leisure, they begin to engage in philosophy as a discipline, motivated by wonder (thaumazein) or perplexity (aporia).

My videos are used by students, lifelong learners, other professors, and professionals to learn more about topics, texts, and thinkers in philosophy, religious studies, literature, social-political theory, critical thinking, and communications. These include college and university classes, British A-levels preparation, and Indian civil service (IAS) examination preparation

For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow. Ecclesiastes 1:18

Dr. Sadler. I thank you for all of your work. Your generosity of spirit is much appreciated by all students and followers in class and online.

I have followed you for several years and find this metaphysics online course timely. I will be participating with comments as I read, listen and contemplate.

I have studied metaphysics, knowledge for the sake of knowledge, for over 25 years. In addition, I have been writing a treatise entitled Universal Dynamics the Metaphysics of ONE.

In the Meditations Marcus Aurelius hypothesizes, “either all things come from a single rational source and combine together in a coherent whole… or there are only atoms a formless disintegrating mass.”

The “single rational source” Marcus Aurelius refers to is the ONE, the SOURCE, the UNIVERSAL. The enlighten stands in awe and wonderment of the Goodness, Beauty, and Truth of the UNIVERSAL as they experience the Contradiction of the PARTICULAR.

Thank you for allowing me to share.

Are you going to make videos on Schopenhauer anytime soon?

I'm guessing it's safe to say that Aristotle would have been fascinated by the theory of evolution.

I just finished a video game with a heavy philosophical influence, one of the first conversations in the game was about the ship of Theseus, for example. The main characters in the game were androids and robots (often questioning the meaning of it all while reading Kant and Sartre'). Part of the title is Automata, after watching this video I now understand the significance of that word and why it was chosen.
