This is a set of excerpts from the Introduction to Philosophy class I taught at Marist College in 2011, focusing specifically on Aristotle's Metaphysics book 1, using my Vega longneck banjo to illustrate the four causes Aristotle distinguishes. These are:
the final cause or purpose of the thing
the material cause or what the thing is made of
the formal cause or the structure of that thing
the efficient cause or the producer of the thing
