I have a friend that lives on a sea yacht. An otter become friends with his lab. The otter comes in through the dog door, and jumps in the ocean during the day. It's funny. He's just as gentle as a dog.

If you're going to keep certain exotic animals as pets, just give them the type of happiness and comforts they'll never get in the wild, Kotaro and Hana get to swim in both their pool and the river and their owner even gives them birthday parties which they get excited for.

I love how an otter and possum are roommates and their neighbor is a raccoon

There's a couple of Japanese YouTubers who own small clawed asian otters (the one I watch is called Kotsumet) and they're the closest I've seen to having an otter living in your home rather than an outdoor enclosure. They are very very well treated and cared for and they take them anywhere they are allowed. The male they own even knows tricks. I'd say they make good *selective* pets, as they are like a dog and cat combined that also need a large body of water to swim in. It is a lifestyle, like owning an alligator is one. They have captive bred ones since I think there's a couple breeders in Japan

I came for adorable otter action now I'm just blindsided. "I got to check his blanket for scorpions" *then reaches right in as if that's not a big deal.* I beg your damn pardon😅

Im always amazed how close to hands otter paws are.
Give their shoulders more flexability, and their front paws would be near identical to hands.

He reminds me ton a of a bigger ferret. I know what you mean about the way ferrets play - the rough and tumble play is important for mammals according to some studies by behaviourists at least from what I've heard in psych classes lol. You play with him exactly the way I used to play with my ferret! It's interesting to see it in animals from ferrets to otters to everything else. The noises are even similar, tho those jaws are a LOT bigger! Haha

Aww, he is gorgeous but we already have a cat who has a lot of those behaviors. I would only consider an otter if I was close to water.
I see there is a Japanese guy with a pair in his house too. Super endearing but also a lot of work. Thanks for filling in some details about them.

Adorable. I used to work part-time at the San Diego Zoo, and the otters were the most fun.

Mr. Chow is lovely and I'm glad he has you to take care of him. Only very few people can provide what otters need, they're certainly not for the average pet owner or income! I love them, but I would never try keeping one. There are a couple of YouTube otter channels that do a great job and others that don't - it's good to know the difference.
You also need to keep them in at least groups of 2 (Mr Chow is an exception as a rescue of course!).

Stopped by, as I see you are talking about one of my favorite animals on the planet, and had to check it out.
Your knowledge and care/love of this awesome creature is commenable and quite laudable.
Mr Chow is did not disappoint, and was a howl to watch. "No leash"... right on Mr Chow.
Wishing you, Mr Chow and all the animals health and happiness.
