Nice working cleaning up so far - it looks much better! Nice tip on testing for the smell on caps by heating their connections - I like that!!! Looking forward to part 2! I do hope this springs to life - it is pretty rare!

I had, and maybe still have, a PPC Mac where the battery has leaked so badly it actually attacked the metal of the cover and a palm sized slab of rust fell off and landed on the (already terribly) damaged mainboard.

Slightly concerned that you didn't neutralise the back of the board given the sticky patch as you dissambled. Could be some battery juice has made it's way down there but not caused corrosion yet. I think I would be giving a general wash at least to large areas of both sides of the board.
