Toronto, like other places around the globe, are using fire as a means of protection when it comes to forestry. These Prescribed Burns are controlled fires that are meticulously planned and carried out. At High Park in Toronto, one of the city’s most beloved parks, an Ontario-based forestry management company carried out the burn with the goal of protecting the city’s rare, black oak savannahs and woodland. Controlled burns have been taking place long before the formation of Toronto, too, as outlined by the city. “Prior to European settlement, controlled burns were used by Indigenous people to manage and maintain fire-dependent ecosystems including the black oak savannahs in High Park.”
