1. Consider expiry day, 3.15PM.
2. Nifty is at 15650, ( ATM). We hold Call option of 15700. This is OTM and almost approaching zero.
3. Due to sudden news flow at 3.20 PM, Nifty shoots up 100 points and closes at 15750 (ATM)
4. So 15700 is now 50 points ITM or option which was almost zero shot up 50 points.
This is Gamma effect and is more magnified since at expiry option premium will have time value= zero and only intrinsic value.

But the clear picture with regards to how premium goes up so wildly towards premium expiry if there is a violent news for ATM is nicely explained.
