i am guessing this is why EKM was created it protects the DEK with an asymmetric key only usable by the correct user and provider with key-name and secret.

I'm very new to database encryption, but what I'm gathering here is that someone can use this method to gain access to my encrypted data, once they have a copy of the encrypted database? Is that right?
