If you want to live in Germany you should respect their culture and make an effort of learning the language.

Yes, it is possible if you are a highly-skilled foreigner in a speciality that Germany lacks to survive in Germany without speaking German, especially in the larger cities.

In Berlin it can even be difficult to learn German without a large degree of effort and discipline, as your social circle will most likely consist of well-educated professionals who all speak English fluently -- sometimes people can spend years in Berlin without learning a word of German, and occasionally they don't even know any native Germans particularly well.

Even people who theoretically wish to improve their German in this city can languish for years at a rudimentary level because the effort and discipline is not worth sacrificing. And there is the beloved anecdote that the occasional barista or server won't have any German and will have to ask you to order in English.

But you will have a better time in Germany if you learn German, especially if you ever want to step a toe out of Berlin, or fall ill, or own property, or move house, or have a young child who will learn German in school; beyond that, knowing German unlocks a whole world of literature, music, history, culture, and the opportunity for developing any number out of potentially millions of connections with Germans on their own terms rather than on yours.

Living in Germany without learning German is a crime against your future self, robbing you of the opportunity to fully participate in the society and culture of the place you've chosen to live.

If you live constantly in any foreign country then you must respect this country, its culture, its citizens and its language--you have to learn the language of this country.
If you live constantly in Germany, Austria or Sweitzerland then you must learn German language, if you live constantly in Greece or Cyprus then you must learn modern Greek language, if you live constantly in Netherlands or Belgium then you must learn Dutch language, if you live constantly in Denmark then you must learn Danish language, if you live constantly in Sweden then you must learn Swedish language, if you live constantly in Norway then you must learn Norwegian language, if you live constantly in Finland then you must learn Finnish language, if you live constantly in Iceland then you must learn Icelandic language. And so on.

If you are a tourist in a tourist area you are fine without german. They are prepared for it.
Otherwise the effort is what matters. You just need to try and not be perfect in it for your every day life 😊

GERMANS as a nation love to see a foreigner speak their language! This is an issue of respecting German society & culture + integration to the country👍☺👍

Berliners and others are fed up with those people - mainly from english speaking countries - who completely ignore their surroundings and continue speaking English, even after years of living there.

Also, why do you come to a new country if you don't want to truely experience it? You'll never understand its authentic culture without fully immersing yourself into its culture. For that you'll need to learn the language. Otherwise you'll stay on the outside looking in.
I know that some people don't choose to immigrate and just do it for work, or a spouse or as a refugee. But why not make the most of the experience once you're there?

So glad I learned German when I was American military stationed there in 1980. I thought it was not the best choice of a foreign language given I’m a Californian and the proximity to Latin America . Turns out, German is still pretty useful.

Even making an effort to speak the language, they'll he happy.
I've been learning German for a while, but never spoke to a native speaker until I went to Germany in March. I would speak German in Berlin, they would respond in English. I would speak German in Dresden, they responded in German slowly with a bright expression on their face (knowing I was foreign and struggling with speaking). It can be scary, but I'd rather make an effort than not at all.

I'd say everything in every country is in their own language. Why would it be a requirement to have signs in english?

Awesome. The way it should be. Respect their country culture and language and learn how to speak German if you want to live there. I taught myself and I was only there for holiday.
