After a 20 year search, scientists have discovered a rare type of black hole, called IRS 13, in the Milky Way.
This type is known as the Intermediate Mass Black Hole, because their masses fall somewhere between a stellar and supermassive. They are notorious for being extremely difficult to spot. So rare that only a handful of them have been spotted so far. This is because they have to be caught red handed while feasting on a star.
These bad boys could provide important intel on black hole formation and evolution. So with the discovery of every new one, we inch closer to basically unmasking the mystery of black holes.
What makes this one all the more special, is that it could be a missing link between how black holes, which are essentially the final stage of a star’s life cycle, grow into supermassive monsters.
