A favourite villain of the Sharpe series, Sir Henry Simmerson appears in several episodes, first at the Battle of Talavera and finally in India during the period of the 3rd Anglo-Maratha War.

Getting on the wrong side of the Duke of Wellington, Arthur Wellesley, for losing the King's Colours of the South Essex Regiment during a skirmish and then abandoning his troops at Talavera, Simmerson's career witnesses highs and lows.

We follow his career and speculate on what military medals and decorations he may have been awarded which includes the Most Honourable Order of the Garter. Simmerson campaigned in the Peninsula War and India.

Michael Cochrane's performance as Simmerson was sublime.

We all loathe and detest the man and yet here we are all quoting 'that's my style sir'. 👏 😂

From two basic campign medals to The Most Noble Order of the Garter is about the most dramatic escalation in decorations imaginable.

If it wasn't for Major Lennox, he'd have won every award ever conceived by the British Crown. Major Lennox must answer for that!

Although Simmerson appears in only two novels and is mentioned in a third, Michael Cochrane turned him into such a fan favorite that he got to play him in five Sharpe productions.

Never thought I would be interested in medals (although I have a few of my own), but I have found this channel and it's objects of study to have an interesting angle on military history. Campaigns I had never heard of and that sort of thing. Incidentally I visited Waterloo today so feel a bit victorious (being Dutch). While surfing a bit I came across a Royal Mint Roll for the Waterloo medal. These type of rolls are completely new to me and I hope there will be some coverage in 2025 episodes. Cheers from The Netherlands.

The famous Light Brigade under command Black Bob marched 42 miles in 24 hours to Talavera. The Brigade of The 43rd Foot, 52nd Foot and The 95th Rifles was ready for battle when they got to the Talavera.

I seriously doubt Simmerson's Order of the Garter is genuine.

In Sharpe's Challenge we see the main villain, Dodd, wearing a cloth Garter star, obviously a fake, on his faux red coat uniform.

So, my head-canon is that in the aftermath of the storming, Simmerson managed to swipe Dodd's fake star as a self-aggrandising trophy.

I admire your detail to 'been there's and done that's' ; also, my unit's done that's. (2nd ID, 1/9 Inf, Korean DMZ '84-'85)

I think the writers overstepped with the Order of the Garter. The Order of the Bath would have been appropriate and achievable for Simmerson.
