Brian Cox killed it in his roll.

"You borrow. From a bank, Richard."

Hogan - "What do you do when you're short of cash, Sharpe?"

Gets tripped, serves it back straight away. An early sign of the man's character. The writers knew what they were doing.

ITV: "What do you do without a budget?"

Sharpe: "Do without, sir."

Brian Cox is my favorite of all of Wellington's spy masters. And that's saying something because they're all good.

There is a reason sir Arthur respects his reply of do without that most people probably miss, his father was a poet and a bohemian figure in Ireland when he was a boy. When he was bankrupted his son was sent to a military academy were he showed a flair for disciplined life. He admired those who could do without.

I liked Hugh Fraser as Wellington but David Troughton bears a much closer physical resemblance to the duke. He also gives off the cool aloofness Wellington was known for.

Richard Sharpe, the only character badass enough to survive being played by Sean Bean. ;-)

That look on Wellingtons face when Sharpe says 'I do without, Sir.' So much conveyed with that look... Admiration, respect... perhaps even amusement and abject horror at how one could simply "do without'' as Sharpe so eloquently put lol. Nonetheless, the beginnings of a long and mutually beneficial relationship. Brilliant series!

Shoestring budget. But the acting, characters and locations are superb. This is the series that shot Mr Bean into the big league

Hogan: "Richard, give back the shilling."
Wellington: "Hogan, give back the shilling."

"Major Dunnett may not mind his manners." Like every other officer in the entire series.

Men like Sharpe had it hard [being promoted from the 'ranks']. They are 'hated' by both the men [for being and officer] and the 'gentlemen' officers for not being
one of them. But men like Sharpe are the real heroes if they can 'hack it'.

I’d love to see a conversation between Richard Sharpe and Dick Winters.
