Good choice, I' ve read it. It's everything you said, plus darkly erotic and well- written.

What I remember most is the deep loneliness of the heroine- her gradual, intense yet serene alienation from human society. The story has many levels and explores themes like sanity (to name just one), in a chilling unforgettable way.

I recommend Kristen Lavransdatter by Sigrid Undset, also translated by a woman, Tina Nunnally. Historical novel set in 14th Century Norway. Won the Nobel prize in literature for good reason!
