Dr. Shashi Tharoor stated that it is no surprise that the British Empire never set on the sun, as even God couldn't trust the English in the dark. He went on to describe how the handloom weavers in India, who were renowned for their fine muslin cloth that was known as "woven air," had their thumbs broken and their looms destroyed by the British. The British imposed tariffs and duties on Indian cloth and products, and instead shipped raw materials from India to be manufactured into cloth in England, flooding the world's markets with the products of the "dark and satanic mills of Victorian England." This caused the weavers in India to become beggars and India to go from being a world-famous exporter of finished cloth to an importer, with a 27% decline in world trade
