How Rich Italians Used to Watch the Poor Fight for Food

There once was a Medieval land of plenty, known as "Cockaigne," where food literally fell from the sky. It was imaginary, of course, but it was the over-the-top inspiration for a very real type of festival that was popular in Italy in the 1700s. It was known as "cuccagna," and it represents an important if not slightly disturbing moment in Italian food culture. The aristocrats and royals would build temporary palaces and statues, which they covered with food and then - on their signal - allowed poor villagers to ransack.

When even the Father of sadism gets freaked out, that shit must've been on a whole other level of gruesome.

My town still does the greasy pole every year to celebrate Mary Queen of Scots' visit. A local butcher donates a good roast and people compete to cut it free from the top of the pole

The fact that those that had an issue with it were more upset by the poor animals than the poor

This seems so cruel, but we watch reality TV, while not as cruel, it is definitely run by rich people who have the "commoners" doing degrading things and jump through hoops for cash and prizes. It's done for entertainment purposes for the rich and poor alike. Only the participants of reality shows will never be as rich as the executive behind the shows.

People are barbarians.
Hungry people are animals
Wealthy people are monsters
But hey...Is it really that much different from Black Friday?

When I visited Italy in high school my favorite food place ended up being Auto Grill or something like that. Little conveyor belts that brought Buffalo mozz and fuckin pastas and all the good stuff. It was cheap too, mainly tourists eating. The little hole in the wall cafes would have the best food you’ve ever had.. and for Italians that’s just normal. The gift of Italian cuisine!

This still happens in a somewhat milder form in public schools in America. Some kid brings a little bag of Takis to class to snack on, and just like seagulls, all the kids who didn’t eat breakfast that morning swoop in and start pestering that kid for his snack.

Now we watch shows like Survivor, Shark Tank, Gordon Ramsay etc where ordinary people fight, scream and humiliate each other for our entertainment. Nothing changes.

Now it doesn’t seem so far fetched that the Hunger Games could’ve lasted so many years.
