Mastering DIY: Installing Gable End Windows and Doors

In my latest YouTube video, I embarked on an incredible DIY journey, transforming my dream home into reality. With no formal trade background, I tackled the installation of stunning black aluminum Crittall-style windows and doors on the gable end of my house. The focal point features a captivating gable window positioned elegantly above a set of four leaf bifold doors, separated by a sturdy steel structure.

To make this vision a reality, I meticulously planned and executed every step, even engineering a custom solution with a reinforced steel frame and timber supports for the gable window. The process involved precise pre-drilling and tapping screws to securely anchor everything to the structural steelwork. Along the way, I encountered challenges, such as the excessive butyl application on the outer edge of the windows, which required careful trimming to ensure a perfect fit.

After nearly a week of hard work, the end result is nothing short of breathtaking. My home now boasts a striking architectural masterpiece that exudes both style and functionality.

A very transparent effort. Well done Chap.

For the horizontal cladding, I would suggest using three sections, so have two butt joints that would deliberately not align with any of the mullions...

The doors looks gorgeous! That was one hell of a good job mate.
Having built my house, mostly by myself, I have an appreciation for having to do things twice to make it work and get it right. I love your sense of humor when it goes a bit wrong! There is always a sinister feeling in the background that it won't be right and it will either be more work or more money to get it right. Great job! You done good and you deserve an overdue break. When you get as far along as you are now- nothing seems easy.

Looks great! Reduced daylight hours make this time of year a bit painful for some of these jobs though.

I was just wondering if you consulted any other bricklayers for 2nd opinion on having blockwork above the window? In case it was just a skills deficit of the ones who did the original build?

Wahey! They look so good you must be well chuffed. For the cladding bit, have you consideed doing it in thirds? Might draw less attention? Brilliant vid 👌

Glad to see these went so much better for you, still not sure I'd try fitting bi-folds myself 😂I'm on the red boards this weekend (doubling up as dot and dab going above them and I agree, I get why they're doing it but it really doesn't seem relevant if your steel is starting to soften.
